NSFAS Appeals Process

NSFAS students must submit online appeal within 30 days of receiving failed application status confirmd with NSFAS status check. Here is how you can submit NSFAS appeal following step by step instructions.

  1. Visit the My NSFAS portal for your NSFAS appeal form.
  2. Sign in to My NSFAS account used to submit your NSFAS application.
  3. Select the “Submit Appeal” tab to fill in the appeal application.
  4. Complete the NSFAS appeal application form.
  5. Provide the reason for your NSFAS application rejected or NSFAS funding being stopped.
  6. Upload certified supporting documents to complete your appeal.
    • Copy of your parent’s ID or a Consent form.
  7. Click the ‘Submit Appeal’ button to formally submit your NSFAS appeal application.

After a successful appeal, you will need to wait for 30 days while NSFAS reviews your appeal and approves your application, for your education welfare The final decision from NSFAS will be send to you via email and the phone call to your registered number.

  • Important Notice: Please be aware that appeal decisions are subject to budget availability, and appeals will only be considered for students who have applied to NSFAS for Financial Aid.
  • Exceed Income Threshold: Appeals from students who exceed the income threshold will be considered if their household income has changed since their application submission, and they provide evidence of this change to NSFAS.

Appeal Criteria for NSFAS Students

Appeals from students who didn’t meet academic eligibility criteria will only be considered if:

  1. The student was a continuing student and wasn’t a full-time or part-time student in the previous academic term.
  2. The student’s inability to complete the academic term successfully was due to severe illness lasting two or more months, or during exams.
  3. There was a death in the immediate family during the academic term.
  4. The student was a victim of a violent crime, such as rape or abuse.
  5. The student became pregnant and gave birth during the academic term, with the institution confirming they can complete their qualification in an additional academic term.
  6. The student has a disability, as confirmed by a medical report, which prevented them from completing the academic term, with the institution confirming they can finish within an additional academic term.
  7. The student can provide evidence that the academic results submitted to NSFAS are incorrect.

Who Can Appeal for NSFAS Application

1. Credit Bureau Income Greater than R350K (First-Time Entering Student)

Reason for Appeal

  1. You are a vulnerable child.
  2. Combined household income is below the threshold.
  3. Change of income.

Supporting Documents Required

  • Declaration form for being a vulnerable child.
  • Proof of income (Payslip).
  • Retrenchment Letter.
  • Letter of Termination.
  • UIF indicating unemployment or incapacity.

2. Declared Income Greater than R350K (First-Time Entering Student)

Reason for Appeal

  • Deceased parent/guardian/spouse.
  • You are a SASSA beneficiary.

Supporting Documents Required

  • Death certificate for parent/guardian/spouse.
  • SASSA Consent Letter.

3. Declared Income Greater than R600K (Disabled Student)

Reason for Appeal

  • You are independent of your biological parents.
  • Cost of education is restricted to one parent.

Supporting Documents Required

  • Court order indicating that the applicant is declared as independent of their biological parents.
  • Divorce decree indicating that the responsibility for the cost of education is restricted to one parent.

Not Eligible for NSFAS Funding

It’s essential to note that certain situations may prevent students from appealing if:

  1. You are registered for a qualification that NSFAS does not fund.
  2. You have exceeded the N+2 limit (or N+3 in the case of students with disabilities).
  3. You are a gap year student who was previously denied financial aid by NSFAS for not meeting academic eligibility criteria.
  4. The institution has not submitted your registration record to NSFAS or has submitted an incorrect registration record. In such cases, inquiries should be directed to the institution.
